What is Dry Skin?
Dry skin, also known as xerosis, is a common skin condition that can affect anyone at any age. If you have persistent dry skin, it could be related to another skin condition or disease. However, skin that is dry is typically not a cause for concern even though it can be an annoyance and difficult to treat. We always recommend talking with your provider about what dry skin treatment options are available after an examination of your skin.
What Causes Dry Skin?
Dry skin can be caused by age, the weather, a skin disease, your job, and hobbies. As you age, your skin becomes thinner and drier. Living in a dry, hot climate or in a severely cold and windy climate can dry out your skin. Winter dry skin is a common complaint during the holiday season along with other winter skin issues that can easily be taken care of by board-certified dermatologists.
Skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis can lead to dry skin. So can careers and hobbies that have you out in the weather and/or washing your hands often. In addition, dehydration can cause dry skin.
Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms of dry skin are not limited to rough skin. Your skin can also be flaky or scaly. Extremely dry skin can crack, causing fissures to appear in the top layer of your skin. It can also be itchy, which can also lead to cracks in the skin.
Cracks in the skin can lead to infection if not treated properly. Skin may also appear dull and ashy when dry, or appear red when irritated. Your lips can also become chapped and cracked if you have dry skin on your face.
Dry Skin Treatment and Relief Options
While dry skin is one of the medical dermatology conditions we treat, there are some at-home relief options available for this minor skin condition. We recommend trying to:
- Avoid hot showers and baths
- Moisturize throughout the day
- Use mild soap cleansers and avoid antibacterial soaps
- Wear weather-appropriate clothing
- Drink the recommended daily amount of water
However, some dry skin may require more than at-home relief options. If your condition persists or becomes a hindrance to your daily life, we recommend scheduling an appointment with one of our dermatology providers to discuss your dry skin treatment options.
You can contact our team to schedule an appointment today. Our team of board-certified dermatologists can create an individualized treatment plan specific to your dry skin.
